If you’re in Houston with a car that has no keys and no title, you are not stuck with it. With Lone Star Wheels, you can still donate it, get it towed away for free, and receive a tax receipt that can help lower your federal taxes. The missing keys are not a deal-breaker as long as a tow truck can safely reach and load your vehicle at your home, apartment, or storage lot anywhere in Greater Houston.
The critical piece is the missing title. In Texas, almost all charitable car donations require a valid title before we can complete the transfer. The good news: you can usually apply for a certified copy (duplicate) Texas title through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles for a small fee, and it typically arrives within a few weeks. Once you have that duplicate title in hand, Lone Star Wheels schedules free pickup anywhere from Katy to Kingwood, Pearland to Spring. Our tow partners use the right flatbed equipment to load a keyless car, then we handle the rest. Your donated vehicle helps support Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) serving people who are blind and visually impaired, and you receive a tax receipt for your records.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm your car’s location and tow access in Greater Houston
Before anything else, make sure a tow truck can reach your vehicle. Is it in a driveway in Cypress, parked at an apartment complex in Midtown, or stored at a lot in Pasadena? Check that it’s not fully blocked in, has at least basic access, and is on solid ground. When you contact Lone Star Wheels, tell us there are no keys so we can plan the right flatbed equipment.
2. Apply for a duplicate Texas title with the TxDMV
Next, request a certified copy of your Texas title. In most cases, you’ll complete Form VTR-34 for a certified copy title through the Texas DMV or your local county tax office (like Harris or Fort Bend). There’s usually a small fee, and processing often runs about 1–4 weeks depending on mail and office volume. Start this step as soon as possible; it’s the key requirement for donation.
3. Keep your paperwork simple and accurate
Use the exact name and address that match the original title and your ID. If you’ve moved from, say, Alief to The Woodlands, make sure your current ID and application are consistent. If there are co-owners listed on the title, they’ll generally need to sign as well. Clean paperwork now prevents delays later when it’s time to sign the title over for donation.
4. Contact Lone Star Wheels while you wait for the title
: Even before the duplicate title arrives, reach out to Lone Star Wheels. We’ll walk through your situation, answer questions, and tentatively plan next steps. Tell us your car is keyless and where it’s located in the Houston area. Once your title arrives, you’ll just call us back to lock in the pickup date, which helps you donate faster once paperwork is ready.
5. Schedule free keyless pickup once your duplicate title arrives
As soon as your certified copy title is in hand, contact us to schedule free towing. We serve all of Greater Houston—Downtown, Galleria, Baytown, Sugar Land, Humble, and beyond. Remind us that you have no keys so we assign a flatbed and driver equipped to load a vehicle that won’t start or shift. Pickup is always free, and you don’t need to be present in some cases if paperwork is pre-signed.
6. Sign the title, hand off the car, and receive your tax receipt
At pickup, you’ll sign the title over to the charity per Texas requirements. The tow driver will guide you where to sign if needed. Your vehicle is then sold, and proceeds support Heritage for the Blind. You’ll receive a tax receipt—typically at least $500—by mail. If the sale exceeds $500, you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C when you file your federal taxes.
Potential complications to watch for
Title is in another person’s name or includes a co-owner
Tip: If the old title or registration shows a different owner, or lists two people joined by “and,” the DMV may require that person’s signature or documentation such as a power of attorney, death certificate, or court papers. Sort this out with TxDMV before scheduling pickup so the title transfer to charity can be completed without last-minute issues.
Vehicle is blocked in, inoperable, or stuck without access
Tip: A missing key is fine, but we still need physical access. If your car is behind a locked gate in Sharpstown, on flat tires in a tight garage in Montrose, or buried in a backyard in Channelview, tell us up front. We may need you to move other vehicles, clear debris, or coordinate with property management so our flatbed can safely load it.
Out-of-state or missing Texas paperwork
Tip: If the last title was from another state, or you only have an old registration, the process can be a bit different. Call the Texas DMV or your county tax office to confirm how to request a duplicate or transfer to Texas first. Once you have a proper title in your name, Lone Star Wheels can proceed with a smooth Houston-area donation.
DMV delays or incomplete duplicate title application
Tip: If any boxes are left blank, signatures are missing, or fees are short, the DMV may reject or delay your duplicate title. Double-check your VTR-34 and supporting documents, or ask the clerk to review them before you leave the tax office. Starting early and getting it right the first time keeps your donation timeline on track.
